Basic Fundamentals for Your Setup for Spine/Extremities Adjustments
When I received my first adjustments in 1995, I was absolutely blown away!! I was working with patients at Cal State University, Northridge in the Physical Therapy bay having the time of my life helping people feel better, re-learn how to walk, provide relief, etc. But when I hobbled in to the clinic at Cleveland Chiropractic College, Los Angeles, I was in a lot of pain. I could barely walk, my lower back was hurting tremendously, and I was about to experience one of the most amazing office visits of my life. A friend of mine who I was playing volleyball with at the time was a Tri 10 Intern, who recommended that I see him. So I went, he did his physical exam and asked for the clinician to observe his adjustments on me. I received a side posture, a mid thoracic, and a cervical adjustment. I have never experienced these things before in my entire life and I thought I was broken in 3 pieces!!! However, to my amazement, I felt so much better!! I could walk better!! I couldn’t believe it!! What just happened??? We spoke for a few moments after, and I walked right up from the school clinic to admissions and enrolled that day in chiropractic school!! I knew I would be a chiropractor for the rest of my life!!
So, what has happened since??? Well fast forward over the next 25 years, lots and lots and lots of seminars learning different styles of adjusting. Very cool, very enlightening, very powerful. But!! There was one thing in particular that never stood out to me at all, and that was that “The Doctor’s Body” was never the focus. It was always focused on “the adjustment” itself. Making sure we deliver a solid adjustment.
If providing an incredible adjustment is so important, then why are there so many doctors out there whose bodies are getting injured, run down, seeking consistent care to stay in the game longer (which by the way isn’t a bad thing to seek/receive care), and walking away from practice??? For the many I’ve seen over the years, after we took a thorough history, and I was able to observe their setups for adjustments, I realized it was THEIR POSTURE that was not as good as it could be. They can deliver amazing adjustments, but at the price of their body breaking down from either poor technique, poor biomechanics, and/or both.
As a side note, many of them have increased in weight to offset the lack of muscle strength to make the adjustments. I’ll cover that in later videos.
That’s the purpose of this video series, TO SOLIDIFY FOR YOU: BETTER POSTURE, BETTER BIOMECHANICS, BETTER BODY…LONG TERM!! This way, should you choose, you can stay in the game happier, healthier, and longer. =)
